The little that we know about the early history of Bhutan can be drawn from landmarks that have withstood time. Here, you can find tales and legends about great saints and their deeds that have shaped what Bhutan stands for today.
Guru Rinpoche arrived in the 8th century AD “flying upon the back of a tigress” and sowed the first seeds of Buddhism in the country. In 1616, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal established a temporal and spiritual system of governance, introducing the first code of laws, and built imposing fortresses all over the country that stand out against a backdrop of lush forests and striking peaks.
In 1907, Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck was elected as the first hereditary king of Bhutan, establishing the Wangchuck dynasty that continues to rule the kingdom today. His reign marked the beginning of modern Bhutan’s political unification and development. The monarchy passed through subsequent generations, with each king contributing to Bhutan’s unique path of development. In 1972, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck was enthroned as the fourth hereditary monarch, inheriting a legacy of progressive leadership and continuing Bhutan’s tradition of prioritizing the happiness and well-being of its people through the philosophy of
On the roof of the world, straddling ridges that run parallel to each other to form the mighty Himalayas lies Bhutan, the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon. This is a fabled land that lends credence to the legend that Guru Padmasambhava concealed select paradises from negative influences. Here, centuries old ways of life, culture and tradition blend harmoniously within modern times to present a nation like no other.
Bhutan is today a most sought-after destination for travel. Just four decades after centuries of self-imposed isolation, Bhutan has emerged as a nation globally renowned for its development philosophy, known as Gross National Happiness, as well as its commitment to environmental conservation, religious and cultural preservation, and more.
The influence of religion permeates every aspect of Bhutanese lives. Enrolling a child into the monastic order is considered as dear as modern education. Hundreds of sacred monasteries, stupas, religious institutions, prayer flags and prayer wheels dot the countryside. Bhutanese families make pilgrimages to monasteries to offer prayers and butter lamps.
In historical records, Bhutan was known as Lhojong Menjong “the Southern Valley of Medicinal Herbs”. Besides these rare herbs, the Bhutanese seasons are reflected in full color by wild flowers and plants which carpet the mountainsides.
Bhutan’s extraordinary altitude range—from 200 to over 7,000 meters—offers visitors an incredible diversity of landscapes within a single journey. Travel from steamy subtropical jungles in the south through terraced valleys and lush forests in the temperate central region, to pristine alpine wilderness and snow-capped Himalayan peaks in the north, each zone supporting unique flora, fauna, and traditional lifestyles.

In just three decades Bhutan has moved from the medieval age into the 21st century. In the face of such dramatic development, the country’s policy is firmly hinged upon the preservation of tradition and culture. The overriding principle behind the nation’s development goal is “Gross National Happiness”. In environment, Bhutan follows the policy of the “Middle Path”. Education and health services are free, and a decentralized system of governance has developed steadily over the year. A cautious approach has been taken towards tourism and industrialization to ensure a practical and substantial future.
